An introduction to part 3: A Colour Vision

As an introduction to part three, we are asked to read blog posts on WeAreOCA relating to the 2010 Brighton Photo Biennial, 2011 Format Photography Festival and the 2011 Hereford Photo Festival. The posts, and discussions, provide much of interest, below, are notes taken from the posts.

Notes-street photography…start by putting the camera away

There is much to take from these posts, particularly the personal responses to some of the works presented. For instance, I know that the work of Peter Dench is the subject of upcoming exercises in this section. I was interested that the work he showed at the Format photography festival was universally disliked by the authors of the blog posts and in the comments. The term ‘unsophisticated’ is used to describe his work, as well as picking fault because of the similarities that can be drawn with Martin Parr. I wonder if Dench’s lack of art photographer credentials could be a reason for this analysis? On the other side of the spectrum however, Simon Roberts Election Project is criticised for being too mannered…a recurring theme is how photographs can produce strong, and sometimes, contradictory feelings in the viewer-it is important I think to remember that there is no such thing as a definitive reading, indeed, to be able to recognise multiple viewpoints and be open to changing your mind requires confidence.
